House Portraits

These are always a challenge, as the best prospect of the house itself does not always provide the most pleasing composition for a painting; frequently the lie of the land or the position of surrounding trees exert a greater influence on the final choice.

House 1
The tower presented a problem, as from virtually any other angle it tended to unbalance the composition. Luckily it was possible to take a position with the tower behind the house, and far enough away to include the whole building.

 

House 2
This presented a rather different problem, in that it is a village house with a walled garden. There was no view of the house at all from outsde the garden, but fortunately one corner of thegarden inside the wall provided just enough distance.
